Naked portafilter

A naked, or bottomless, portafilter has no spouts underneath the basket, so espresso streams directly out of the bottom of the puck into the cup rather than being funneled through two enclosed tubes. This exposes exactly what is happening at the base of the coffee bed the moment water starts flowing.

That visibility is the main reason people use one; problems like channeling, uneven distribution, or an off-center basket show up immediately as uneven streams, uneven color, or spraying, none of which are visible with a regular spouted portafilter. It has become a common tool for practicing and troubleshooting puck preparation technique.

The tradeoff is mess, since a poorly prepped shot on a naked portafilter can spray espresso outward instead of staying contained in spouts. Buying one means checking it fits your specific machine's group head size. A common mistake is assuming a naked portafilter itself improves shots, when really it only reveals problems that better distribution and tamping need to fix.
